What is a belt tensioner damper?
A belt tensioner damper is a component of an accessory drive belt system. It is a pulley connected to a spring-loaded arm which keeps tension on the belt to ensure proper operation of the accessories that are driven by the belt, such as the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor.
How do I know if my belt tensioner damper is faulty?
Symptoms of a faulty belt tensioner damper include: squealing or chirping noises coming from the belt system, visible wear or fraying on the belt, and/or vibration coming from the belt system.
Can a faulty belt tensioner damper cause damage to other components?
Yes, a faulty belt tensioner damper can cause damage to other components in the accessory drive belt system, such as the belt, pulleys, and accessories that are driven by the belt.
How do I replace a belt tensioner damper?
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the belt from the belt tensioner damper.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the belt tensioner damper, if applicable.
- Remove the bolts that secure the belt tensioner damper to the engine.
- Install the new belt tensioner damper and secure with the bolts.
- Reconnect the electrical connector, if applicable.
- Route the belt around the pulleys and tensioner damper.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
