What is a Distributor Advance Weight?
A Distributor Advance Weight is a spring-loaded weight attached to the distributor shaft. It helps the distributor to advance the spark timing in the engine as the engine RPM increases.
How do I know if my Distributor Advance Weight is faulty?
If your Distributor Advance Weight is faulty, you may notice engine performance issues such as poor acceleration, misfiring, and poor fuel economy. Additionally, you may hear a rattling noise coming from the distributor.
Can a faulty Distributor Advance Weight cause damage to my engine?
Yes, a faulty Distributor Advance Weight can cause engine damage if it is not replaced. The engine may overheat, or the piston rings may become damaged due to incorrect spark timing.
How do I replace the Distributor Advance Weight?
To replace the Distributor Advance Weight:
- Disconnect the battery cable.
- Remove the distributor cap and rotor.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the distributor.
- Remove the distributor hold-down bolt and the distributor.
- Remove the Distributor Advance Weight from the distributor shaft.
- Install the new Distributor Advance Weight on the distributor shaft.
- Reinstall the distributor, hold-down bolt, wiring harness and rotor.
- Reconnect the battery cable.
How often should I inspect my Distributor Advance Weight?
It is recommended that you inspect your Distributor Advance Weight every 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first. During the inspection, look for signs of wear, corrosion or any other damage.
