What is a rocker panel?

A rocker panel is the area of a vehicle located on either side of the vehicle, between the wheel wells and the doors. It is a structural component that provides both protection and support for the underside of the vehicle.

What is the purpose of a rocker panel?

The rocker panel is an important structural component of the vehicle. It provides support for the vehicle's body, and prevents the sides of the vehicle from caving in due to the weight of the vehicle. In addition, the rocker panel helps to reduce road noise and vibration, and provides an area to mount exterior trim.

How do I determine if my rocker panel is faulty?

The most common signs of a faulty rocker panel are rust, corrosion, and cracks. Rust and corrosion can be identified by inspecting the panels for any discoloration or flaking paint. Cracks can be identified by feeling along the edges of the panel for any bumps or unevenness.

Can a faulty rocker panel cause damage?

Yes, a faulty rocker panel can cause damage. If the panel is corroded or cracked, it may not be able to adequately support the weight of the vehicle, which can cause the side of the vehicle to cave in. In addition, a faulty panel may not be able to adequately reduce road noise and vibration, which can result in a less comfortable ride.

How do I replace my rocker panel?

Replacing a rocker panel is a relatively involved process that should be done by a qualified mechanic. The steps for replacing a rocker panel are as follows:

  1. Disconnect the battery and remove the door trim panels.
  2. Remove the interior and exterior trim pieces.
  3. Remove the bolts and screws that hold the panel in place.
  4. Cut the old panel away from the body of the vehicle with a reciprocating saw.
  5. Grind down any remaining metal in the area where the new panel will be installed.
  6. Install the new panel and secure it with bolts and screws.
  7. Reinstall the interior and exterior trim pieces.
  8. Reconnect the battery and reinstall the door trim panels.

How often should I inspect my rocker panel?

It is recommended that you inspect your rocker panel at least twice a year. Additionally, any time you notice any signs of rust, corrosion, or cracks, you should have the panel inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.
