What is the difference between hard and soft tonneau covers?

If you're using our filters above, you'll see a "Cover Material" with options for Hard or Soft.

A soft tonneau cover is made with a vinyl material, similar to a tarp. Soft tonneau covers can come in the form of a rolling or folding cover.

A hard tonneau cover is made up of a hard plastic or aluminum. A hard tonneau cover can come in nearly any form: rolling, folding, retractable and hinged.

Typically speaking, a soft tonneau cover will be cheaper than a hard tonneau cover. One of the most popular tonneau covers on the road is a soft folding cover.

On the contrary, a hard tonneau cover will usually be a little more expensive, but it will be more sturdy and provide you with more security. It is much more difficult for a thief to break into a hard tonneau than a soft vinyl tonneau cover.

What is the most secure truck bed cover?

Any of our hard tonneau cover options will provide a high level of security. This is especially true if your tailgate locks, which further helps to prevent unwanted access.

Of the hard tonneau covers, the one-piece hinged tonneau cover will be the most secure. These are made of a hard ABS plastic, and are very difficult to break into. If you pair it with a lockable hinged cover, you will get your highest level of security. The trade-off with a hinged tonneau cover is that it is more difficult to access your cargo near the bulkhead.

The best combination between security and usability is a hard folding tonneau cover, such as one of the BAK tonneau cover options. These give you a high level of cargo security, while also giving you a high level of cargo access when you need it.

Keep in mind, no truck bed cover is 100% theft proof. But even a soft top vinyl cover will give you a higher level of security simply by hiding your belongings.

Do tonneau covers save gas?

This is a debated topic. There are studies that show tonneau covers can save up to 10% in fuel savings. This is because the tonneau cover can help reduce drag. You'll have to keep in mind that you will only see fuel savings when you are driving at highway speeds, where the drag is most noticeable.

Some experts doubt these studies. We would not recommend purchasing solely for the fuel savings, but think of it more as a "nice to have" if you happen to notice some savings.

Will my tonneau cover work with my toolbox?

If you have an over-the-rails toolbox, you will need to get a tonneau cover that is compatible with it. We do have a couple a couple of tonneau cover options that work with over-the-rail toolboxes. These truck bed covers will fit standard size 18-20" toolboxes. The way it works is that the tonneau cover will be 18-20" shorter than normal to accommodate your toolbox.

Another option is to remove your toolbox, and install a normal tonneau cover. We sell some under-the-rails toolboxes, like the BAKBox toolbox that is compatible with all BAK tonneau covers.
