Engine pistons are among the hardest-working components in your vehicle, cycling thousands of times per minute to convert fuel combustion into mechanical motion. When pistons begin to fail, early detection can prevent catastrophic engine damage that leaves you with repair bills in the thousands. Recognizing the warning signs—from metallic knocking to excessive oil consumption—gives you the information needed to schedule repairs before the engine seizes or suffers internal failure.

What Does an Engine Piston Do?

An engine piston is a cylindrical component that moves up and down inside each engine cylinder. During the intake stroke, it draws in a mixture of air and fuel; during compression, it squeezes that mixture to prepare it for ignition; during the power stroke, it absorbs the explosive force of combustion and transfers that energy through the connecting rod to the crankshaft, which ultimately turns your wheels. Piston rings—thin metal bands that wrap around the piston—create a seal between the piston and cylinder wall to prevent combustion gases from escaping and to prevent oil from entering the combustion chamber. Can You Drive With a Bad Engine Piston?

Driving with a failing piston is risky and will result in rapid, catastrophic engine damage. A compromised piston cannot seal the cylinder, which means compression continues to drop and combustion pressure leaks away. Eventually, friction and metal-to-metal contact can cause the piston to seize inside the cylinder, resulting in a locked engine that won't turn over.
