Timing gears are among the most critical components in your engine because they keep the crankshaft and camshaft perfectly synchronized. When these gears wear out, that synchronization breaks down, leading to incorrect valve timing and combustion problems that grow worse rapidly. Recognizing the early warning signs of timing gear failure allows you to address the problem before it causes severe engine damage.

What Does a Timing Gear Set Do?

Your timing gears work together to ensure that the intake and exhaust valves open and close at precisely the right moments during each engine cycle. The crankshaft gear drives the camshaft gear at a specific ratio, maintaining exact synchronization between these two shafts.
