This is an estimate, not an inspection. Brakes are a safety-critical system. Always verify pad thickness against the minimum specification in your vehicle's service manual, and have any measurement near or below the threshold confirmed by a qualified technician before continuing to drive.

How long do brake pads last?

Anywhere from 25,000 to 70,000 miles. A delivery van that never leaves town can chew through front pads in two years. The same pads on a highway commuter might go six. Mileage on its own tells you almost nothing.

Measure the pad instead. A new one carries 10 to 12mm of friction material on a steel backing plate. At 3mm you replace it. At 2mm it is finished. That leaves 7 to 9mm of usable pad, and the calculator above works out how far that gets you.

How to measure your brake pads

  1. Park on level ground, let the brakes cool, chock the wheels.
  2. Look through the wheel spokes at the caliper. On a lot of vehicles you can see the outer pad without touching anything. Pulling the wheel is better and lets you check the inner pad, which usually wears faster.
  3. Measure the friction material. Not the backing plate. Including the steel is the mistake almost everyone makes the first time, and it makes a worn pad look fine.
  4. Check both pads on the caliper. One much thinner than the other points at seized slide pins, and that needs sorting out no matter what number the calculator gives you.

What kills pads faster

Stop-and-go traffic

Every stop wears the pad. City miles pack in far more stops than highway miles, which is why the same set can last twice as long on one car as another.

Weight

Heavier vehicle, harder stop, more wear. A three-row SUV goes through pads noticeably faster than a compact driven the same way.

Towing and hills

Towing adds weight. Long descents mean riding the brakes to hold a load back. Both cook the pads and both shorten their life considerably.

Front versus rear

Weight shifts forward when you brake, so the fronts do 70 to 75% of the work. Front pads typically need doing one and a half to two times as often as rears. Vehicles with an electric parking brake on the rear axle can buck that trend.

Do not wait for the noise

A squeal from the wear indicator means you are already at the threshold. Grinding means the friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting into the rotor, which turns a pad job into a pad and rotor job. Also worth acting on: a pedal that sinks further than it used to, a pulsation under braking, or the car pulling to one side when you stop.

Frequently asked questions

At what thickness should brake pads be replaced?

3mm of friction material. At 2mm the pad is done. Some vehicles specify their own minimum, so check the service manual. Replacing at 3mm keeps you off the rotors, which is where a cheap job turns expensive.

How many miles do brake pads last?

Front pads on a car: roughly 30,000 miles in city traffic, 45,000 mixed, up to 70,000 on mostly highway. Rears usually go one and a half to two times longer. Heavy vehicles and towing pull all of those numbers down.

Can I measure brake pads without removing the wheel?

Usually you can see the outer pad through the spokes and get a reading with a gauge or a ruler. The inner pad often wears faster and you cannot see it that way. If the outer one is anywhere near 4mm, pull the wheel and check both.

Do I need to replace the rotors at the same time?

Not always. Rotors have a minimum thickness stamped on the hat and get measured separately. Replace or resurface them if they are under spec, scored, heat-cracked, or if you ran the pads down to the backing plate. Plenty of shops do rotors with every pad job because the labor is already paid for.

Why did my front pads wear out so much faster than the rears?

They are supposed to. The fronts handle 70 to 75% of the braking. Fronts wearing out in half the time of the rears is normal on most vehicles.

How accurate is this calculator?

It projects typical wear rates forward from the thickness you measured. Pad compound, rotor condition, a sticking caliper, and your right foot all move the number. Use it to plan, not to predict. Re-measure every few thousand miles and get anything near 3mm looked at.
