  • 2002 · Engine and cooling70000 mi

Engine died at 55 mph, restarted right away, died out again in the middle of an intersection about three miles away. Nearly caused an accident. This time it took about 10 minutes before it would start. I found there is a recall on the 2001 avalanche, why not the 2002?

  • 2004 · Electrical system30842 mi

Speedo at 60 miles per hour when stopped. Increases from there when moving. Can not tell correct speed. Appears to be a common problem with 03 to 06 chevy vehicles. Warranty up on vehicle due to age not miles. Dealer says cost is over $500.

  • 2003 · BrakesMileage not given

Brakes lines broke while in traffic at stop light. Manage to drive in low gear 1/2 block to repair shop. They replaced the lines

How to read this page

Every figure comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public complaint database, which holds every safety-related defect complaint filed by owners since 1995. We refresh it monthly and count each complaint once per component it names. Data through September 6, 2026.

NHTSA only accepts safety-related complaints. Rattles, paint, infotainment bugs and other annoyances are under-reported here, so this page is a map of what fails in ways owners consider dangerous, not a full reliability score.

Counts are raw. Use the year-over-year shape and the component mix, not the absolute numbers. Where a component maps to parts we stock, the row links to that category filtered to the year you are viewing. Air bag and seat belt complaints link to the recall checker instead, because those repairs are almost always covered.
