In owners' words

Complaint narratives as filed with NHTSA, trimmed for length.

  • 2007 · Powertrain and transmission4500 mi

The motorcycle has a serious shudder issue when taking off from a stopped position. It shifts hard from 1st to 2nd gear. It frequently slips out of 2nd gear and into neutral while riding in 2nd gear.

  • 2006 · Powertrain and transmission8300 mi

The bike would jump horribly when in second gear. After about a hundred miles riding like this, now the bike will jump into neutral while i'm riding in second gear; very dangerous. This problem has been reported by hundreds, if not thousands, of suzuki m109r riders. Suzuki should pay for this now!

  • 2008 · Powertrain and transmission21550 mi

Does not shift securely into second gear; can also pop out of second gear suddenly. This is true under even very light acceleration and careful, deliberate shifting. *js

How to read this page

Every figure comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public complaint database, which holds every safety-related defect complaint filed by owners since 1995. We refresh it monthly and count each complaint once per component it names. Data through September 6, 2026.

NHTSA only accepts safety-related complaints. Rattles, paint, infotainment bugs and other annoyances are under-reported here, so this page is a map of what fails in ways owners consider dangerous, not a full reliability score.

Counts are raw. Use the year-over-year shape and the component mix, not the absolute numbers. Where a component maps to parts we stock, the row links to that category filtered to the year you are viewing. Air bag and seat belt complaints link to the recall checker instead, because those repairs are almost always covered.
